On Witnessing - Atong Atem

  • 2 Wharf Street Docklands, VIC, 3008 Australia (map)

On Witnessing is an exhibition of photographs that speak to the broad yet familiar presentations of youth cultures across various cities. Atong Atem showcases a diversity of personal relationships and people she's observed from Naarm, Melbourne, Cadi, Sydney, Suva, Fiji and parts of Turtle Island. On Witnessing is an ode to the importance of documenting and archiving the communities and spaces that we inhabit.

This event is taking place on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri Peoples of the Kulin Nations. We pay our respects to Elders past and present. Indigenous sovereignty has never been ceded in so-called Australia.

The Artist’s Guild Gallery is fully wheelchair accessible. It’s also in the free tram zone!

Creative Agency Artist Fellow Program

“Unsung Spaces” showcases works created by painter Carla van Laar during her 2018 Artist Fellowship at RMIT's creative research lab, Creative Agency, in Melbourne.

The paintings explore urban spaces around RMIT that are well travelled, strangely familiar and evocative, yet uncelebrated due to their transient, neglected or un-designed nature.

Carla worked with ink, chalk and house paint on particle board; materials that echo the built-up and sometimes shabby environments that she studies. Her paintings draw attention to the sparsity of organic shapes, and raise questions of how people in cities maintain and nurture connection with the living world as we move from and to places, through unsung spaces.

Creative Agency, under the leadership of Anne Harris, is an innovative research lab at RMIT University based across the School of Education and Design and Creative Practice which seeks to Innovate—Activate—Educate research about creativity, creative practice and its power to change social structures. We work across sectors, co-designing transdisciplinary projects that provoke social change through creative making.

Launched in August 2017, Creative Agency provides a key maker-space and community hub in inner-city Melbourne. Our regular series of community collaborative playdates continues twice yearly, and our Artist Fellow program celebrates Carla van Laar as our first Artist Fellow in 2018. Our 40 core members from across cultural industries, community arts, public education, design and digital media, government and industry invite you to engage with Creative Agency to kick-start change in your worlds and relationships.

The Artists Guild presents: A WINDOW INTO

A WINDOW INTO

“A Window Into” showcases the finished work and process of 13 diverse women artists. Each installation invites you behind the scenes to explore elements of the artists process and provides A Window Into their arts practice.

The intention behind the exhibition is to give voice to the unseen formation and development of a work. Highlighting that how a work is created, what it is made from, where it is created and why it is created, is processed in various ways and on different timelines. The exhibition has been curated to show an array of mediums including ceramics, mixed media, textile, collage, photography, found objects, performance, painting, writing, and film.

As an organisation we are committed to purposefully seeking out adequate representation of women within our exhibitions including women of colour, Indigenous women, and women from the LGBTQIA community.

We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land where this exhibition is taking place, the Boon Wurrung and Woiwurrung (Wurundjeri) peoples of the Kulin Nation and pay respect to their Elders, past and present.

BUILD/REBUILD GROUP EXHIBITION CALL OUT

Build/Rebuild - Group Exhibition Call Out 2018
BUILD/REBUILD - WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR

Women visual art art graduates make up 74% of total graduates, and yet they comprise only 40% of the commercial and museum sector. We at The Artists Guild are working to champion women artists; and changing the structure of what a traditional gallery has been up to now. In celebration of this; we are looking for innovative and dynamic contemporary works for our first group exhibition call out Build/Rebuild. The theme Build/Rebuild is a loosely themed group show. The word build is to construct, to create form and to bring together materials. Rebuild is to reformulate, to make extensive repairs, to restore and to make changes.
The Artists Guild welcomes a variety of mediums including metals, ceramics, photography, textile, painting, video and installations. We also welcome playful works that encourage engagement with the exhibition.

Our exhibitions are designed to engage audiences both aesthetically and conceptually. We are committed to making sure that we have adequate representation for women of colour, Indigenous women and women from LGBTI community.

*We use an inclusive definition of ‘woman’ and ‘female’ and we welcome trans women, gender queer women, and non-binary individuals who are significantly female-identified.

APPLICATIONS CLOSE 6TH SEPTEMBER 2018.
